I accept this ‘accusation’ with pride!

A reply to Ahmadinejad’s denial of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani’s stoning verdict

On Sunday 19 September, in an interview with ABC Television in the US, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke of Sakineh Mohamadi Ashtiani’s sentence to stoning and said “This lady has never been sentenced to stoning.” He also said, “An individual in Germany has created a disturbance with the publication of forged news. This has turned opinion against Iran.” Addressing Western governments, he added “Today they support a lady who defends human rights on the basis of manufactured news…”

The person who Ahmadinejad has refused to call by name is me (Mina Ahadi) and I accept the ’accusation’ with pride. Through our immense international campaign, we have put the criminal government of the Islamic Republic under pressure. On behalf of thousands of people who gave a positive reply to our call to save Sakineh, and on behalf of 1,750,000 people who have signed petitions to save her, it is an honour to announce that Ahmadinejad’s criminal government has been reduced to this state.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad denies the sentence to stone Sakineh but I have documents which irrefutably show the opposite. The document sentencing her to stoning, with the Islamic Republic’s judicial stamp and signature, is in my possession. In a press conference in London, I gave this document to the press authorities and now, after hearing Ahmadinejad’s lies, I will make it available to the relevant authorities again.

The truth is, support for Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani and the great worldwide movement against stoning and execution have made the Islamic regime, including Ahmadinejad, spout nonsense. I for one am proud to have worked alongside hundreds of human rights activists worldwide to try to bring the oppressive and anti-women policies of this regime to the attention of the freedom-loving people of the world. This is a movement against the Islamic regime of Iran which perpetrates murder and crime. The campaign to defend Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani has informed millions of people worldwide and has put them in touch with the story of a woman who has been incarcerated by the Islamic Republic with the possibility of her being stoned or executed at any moment. Sakineh is 43 years old and is in prison in Tabriz. For four years she has been contending with the stoning sentence.

Previously, confirmation of Sakineh’s stoning sentence has been fully acknowledged by Iran’s foreign minister and his spokesman and the Iranian embassy in England. It has also been asserted by the judicial authorities in Tabriz and the head of the human rights section in Tehran. Even they will be puzzled by Ahmadinejad’s shameless denial.

Now, millions have heard of Sakineh and know of her fate. These millions of people, more than ever before, begin to see what kind of beasts the Iranian people have to deal in government… These people lie with ease. They are hypocrites and commit criminal acts with complete indifference. They don’t seem to shy away from describing these acts either.

The Islamic Republic has so far stoned at least 150 people. We have already published a list of those who have been killed in this manner. At present, a minimum of 24 people are waiting in prisons to be stoned.  Stoning, execution, flogging, torture and rape have been a regular occurrence over the past 31 years that the judicial practices of this regime have been operating. Can Mr Ahmadinejad deny this too?

What is astonishing and hateful to the people of the world is that the heads of regimes like this can still attend the United Nations and other gatherings representing the Iranian people and addressing these assemblies with their shameless lies.

  3. [...] Clearly the regime hopes to brand Ms Ashtiani a murderer in order to push back the immense international campaign in her defence. This, however, is unlikely given the outrage surrounding this case in particular and the barbaric practice of stoning in general. This is largely due to Ms Ashtiani’s children who pleaded for international support when she was to be imminently stoned to death and Mina Ahadi who is referred to by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as a ‘person in Germany.’ Mina Ahadi accepts Ahmadinejad’s ‘accusation’ with pride  [...]
