Stoning sentence of Ameneh Laval in Nigeria is postponed until January 2004

Shahnaz is sentenced to death by stoning in Iran

According to the news broadcast on Wednesday June 5, the final decision on the death to stoning of Ameneh Laval, a woman from northern Nigeria, has now been postponed to the early 2004. This is clearly a retreat on the part of the Islamists in Nigeria.  Earlier this year the death by stoning sentence handed down to Safiya Hosseini, another women from Nigeria, was withdrawn under international pressure.

In contrast the Islamic Republic of Iran has recently sentenced another woman, Shahnaz, from the city of Karaj, to death by stoning. Shahnaz together with Sima and Ferdos from Iran and Zafaran Bibi from Pakistan are awaiting their barbaric death by stoning.

The International Committee Against Stoning has launched a mass campaign to save these women and expose and put pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran as the main perpetrator of this medieval and inhumane practice.

We urge all human rights and pro-women organizations, all trade unions and progressive political parties to join our campaign and condemn the Islamic Republic of Iran, the country in which most stoning cases take place, and as a country which shows no regards to international protests and pressure. Furthermore we will specially target the western governments and the European Union for their rapprochement policy towards the Iranian government.

Stoning women to death for sexual relationships outside marriage is a barbaric and medieval practice. Our international protests and struggles can put an end to it.

Please send your protest letter to president of Iran, Mohammad Khatami,  and send a copy of it to European Union.   Also please send a copy of your protest letter to us.

To Mohammad Khatami, the President of Islamic Republic of Iran

We have been informed that three women, Sima, Ferdos and Shahnaz, have been sentenced to death by stoning.   Since your government came to power and under your presidency several women have been stoned to death.

We express our strong protest against this medieval treatment towards women and demand the withdrawal of stoning law.  Stoning a woman or a man to death for what she/he dose in thier private life is a shame for humanity and has to be stopped immediately.
